You know what formerly common phrases I don't hear much anymore? When Belfour was obviously on his way out of Dallas, there were two camps of thought: those that thought he still had what it took to win, and those that didn't. Fortunately, I was of the former group, because I would hate to be as wrong as the other group was.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't think there was any reason for him to stay in Dallas - or for the Stars to keep him. He needed the change of scenery. Goalies typically have bizarre psyches, and Eddie the Eagle is far from an exception in that regard. He wasn't getting along with his teammates, didn't feel appreciated by the fans, and even had he put up a good season the next year he wouldn't have been excited about it. But Toronto was happy to have him, and he was happy to go there. Two seasons later, it's obvious it worked for both parties. S
o far, Ed Belfour has been the most important player in the playoffs. Without him between the pipes, Toronto would be sitting at home watching Ottawa play in the second round. But they do have him, and he single-handedly pushed the Leafs to victory through that series, posting a 1.49 goals against average over seven games.
That's just Eddie doing what he loves best... proving people wrong.
